Anti Viral Therapy and Its Future

virus.jpg
Naama Elefant, a researcher at the Hebrew University analyzed the function of microRNAs that led to the discovery.

Viruses are responsible for some of the most debilitating diseases known to mankind, such as avian influenza, AIDS, Ebola, SARS, common cold, chickenpox, influenza, diarrhea, etc. While some of these diseases are taken care of quite well by the immune system viz. common cold, diarrhea, against others such as the HIV, the human body is quite helpless. Although anti-viral drugs such as the HIV drugs do help in slowing down the infection but the current pharmaceutical drugs are nowhere near to completely treat the infection.

antiviral-drug.jpg
The new research focuses on the microRNA genes, which are found in many organisms. Discovered in 1993, microRNA play a big role in a range of biological processes. Their significance in the present study pertains to their ability to inhibit the production of proteins, which are the building blocks of cell and must be produced at the right time and place. MicroRNA genes inhibit proteins by attaching themselves to the proteins. The protein that a microRNA attacks is considered as its target.

The outcome of the research has been the development of an algorithm called RepTAR, which can predict the next target of a microRNA. The RepTAR works by searching thousands of genes in a human through, structural, sequence and physical characteristics and upon identification matches them to hundreds of microRNAs.

Implications for Anti-viral therapy

This technique has helped in finding a group of microRNAs present in viruses. Further research highlighted that microRNAs did indeed inhibit the genes in the human immune system.

Consequently, the anti-viral pharmaceuticals in the future could aim at inhibiting viral microRNA to treat an infection.

Viruses such as HIV are perhaps the biggest scare and the drugs used against it aren't effective enough to save lives, if this discovery leads to a formulation that's effective enough, then it would perhaps be one of the finest discoveries in human history.

Top Natural Ways To Cure Cancer

Though there still doesn't exist a panacea for treating the disease, some promising reports recently published have raised hopes vis-a-vis the power of naturals in arresting the disease.
How wine could help?
Wine, or rather a constituent of the red wine called “resveratrol” could aid in cancer prevention. The ingredient is actually a part of red grapes from which the red wine is derived.
The researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center have found that it works by inhibiting abnormal cell growth. Abnormal cell growth is a prime characteristic of many forms of breast cancers. Consequently, the wine's powers could be harnessed to possibly prevent breast cancers.
In fact “resveratrol” is also sold as a dietary supplements but its effectiveness in suppressing abnormal cell growth has come to light only recently.
A natural substance to the rescue
Cancers can sometimes be quite problematic to treat, as they can stop responding to   cancer drugs, or even become resistant to them. But a natural substance “argyrin” has been found to destroy the unwanted tumor cells. This discovery has been published in the journal “Cancer Cell,” and the research was conducted at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research.
While, research on naturals has shown promise, an advancement has been registered in conventional medicine as well. For instance a compound called “STF-62247” discovered by the Stanford University researchers has been found to selectively damage cancer cells only, rather than target healthy cells too. Since cancer drugs can sometimes harm healthy cell too, this research published in the journal “Cancer Cell,” is perhaps just the first step towards developing effective cancer therapy with minimal side effects.

Top 8 Effective Ways of Dietary Supplements on Diabetes

herbs.jpg
Dietary supplements are formulations that are used to provide consumers with vitamins  fatty acids, minerals, or amino acids that aren't present in sufficient quantity their diet and are even consumed for therapeutic purposes. The following are 8 popular dietary supplements and their performance against type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus, when used therapeutically. The following information is based on the factsheet from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, USA.

  1. Alpha-lipoic acid: (ALA, also known as lipoic acid or thioctic acid) is an antioxidant—a substance that protects against cell damage. ALA is found in certain foods, such as liver, spinach, broccoli, and potatoes. Some people with type 2 diabetes take ALA supplements in the hope of lowering blood glucose levels by improving the body’s ability to use insulin; others use ALA to prevent or treat diabetic neuropathy (a nerve disorder). Supplements are marketed as tablets or capsules.

    • lipolic-acid.jpgALA has been researched for its effect on insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and diabetic neuropathy. Some studies have found benefits, but more research is needed.
    • Because ALA might lower blood sugar too much, people with diabetes who take it must monitor their blood sugar levels very carefully.
  1. Chromium: It is an essential trace mineral supplements —that is, the body requires small amounts of it to function properly. Some people with diabetes take chromium in an effort to improve their blood glucose control. Chromium is found in many foods, but usually only in small amounts; relatively good sources include meat, whole grain products, and some fruits, vegetables, and spices. In supplement form (capsules and tablets), it is sold as chromium picolinate, chromium chloride, and chromium nicotinate.

  • Chromium supplementation has been researched for its effect on glucose control in people with diabetes. Study results have been mixed. Some researchers have found benefits, but many of the studies have not been well designed. Additional, high-quality research is needed.

  • At low doses, short-term use of chromium appears to be safe for most adults. However, people with diabetes should be aware that chromium might cause blood sugar levels to go too low. High doses can cause serious side effects, including kidney problems—an issue of special concern to people with diabetes.

  1. Omega-3 fatty acids: These are polyunsaturated fatty acids that come from foods such as fish, fish oil, vegetable oil (primarily canola and soybean), walnuts, and wheat germ. Omega-3 supplements are available as capsules or oils (such as fish oil). Omega-3s are important in a number of bodily functions, including the movement of calcium and other substances in and out of cells, the relaxation and contraction of muscles, blood clotting, digestion, fertility, cell division, and growth. In addition, omega-3s are thought to protect against heart disease, reduce inflammation, and lower triglyceride levels.

  • Omega-3 fatty acids have been researched for their effect on controlling glucose and reducing heart disease risk in people with type 2 diabetes. Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids lower triglycerides, but do not affect blood glucose control, total cholesterol, or HDL (good) cholesterol in people with diabetes. In some studies, omega-3 fatty acids also raised LDL (bad) cholesterol. Additional research, particularly long-term studies that look specifically at heart disease in people with diabetes, is needed.

  • Omega-3s appear to be safe for most adults at low-to-moderate doses. Safety questions have been raised about fish oil supplements, because some species of fish can be contaminated by substances such as mercury, pesticides, or PCBs. In high doses, fish oil can interact with certain medications, including blood thinners and drugs used for high blood pressure.

  1. Polyphenols: These are antioxidants found in tea and dark chocolate, among other dietary sources—are being studied for possible effects on vascular health (including blood pressure) and on the body's ability to use insulin.
  • Laboratory studies suggest that EGCG, a polyphenol found in green tea  may protect against cardiovascular disease and have a beneficial effect on insulin activity and glucose control. However, a few small clinical trials studying EGCG and green tea in people with diabetes have not shown such effects.

  • No adverse effects of EGCG or green tea were discussed in these studies. Green tea is safe for most adults when used in moderate amounts. However, green tea contains caffeine, which can cause, in some people, insomnia, anxiety, or irritability, among other effects. Green tea also has small amounts of vitamin K, which can make anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin, less effective.

  1. Garlic: Preliminary research has explored the use of garlic for lowering blood glucose levels, but findings have not been consistent.
ginseng.jpg
  1. Magnesium: Studies of the effects of magnesium on blood glucose control have had mixed results, although researchers have found that eating a diet high in magnesium may lower the risk of diabetes.
  2. Coenzyme Q10: There is not enough evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of coenzyme Q10 supplementation as a CAM therapy for diabetes; studies of its ability to affect glucose control have had conflicting findings.
  3. Ginseng: Researchers are studying whether the herbal supplement ginseng and the trace mineral vanadium might help control glucose levels.

While these are just a few of the supplements in use for used in diabetes, people do make use of botanicals such as prickly pear cactus, gurmar, Coccinia indica, aloe vera, fenugreek, and bitter melon to control their glucose levels. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of these botanicals for diabetes.

Fear Trends in Medical Physician Shortage By 2025

The University of Missouri researchers predict that in just about 16 years from now, the US would be lacking medics by a count of 44,000 family physicians and general internists.

Their concerns seem to be grave when you consider that about 50% of all visits to doctors are to physicians. In fact shortage of healthcare workers exists in many parts of the world.

Healthcare Workers Around The World

The number of healthcare workers has been estimated to be about 59 million the world over, and ironically most of them reside in regions and places where they're least needed. For instance, the North American continent, accounts for only 10% of the Global burden of disease, but is home to 37% of the world’s healthcare workers. Not only that but it also spends about 50% of the world's financial resources for health. The following figure shows the details.

On the contrary, the African continent is mired with 24% of the global burden of disease, has only only 3% of the world's health workers, and spends a meager 1% of world's financial resources.

The World Health Organization estimates the shortage of healthcare workers (viz doctors, nurses, midwives) worldwide. The are about 57 countries in the world with the shortage of medics and 37 of those are from Africa. The best state of affairs exists in Europe, where there isn't a shortage. The American continent ranks next, with about 5 countries facing shortage. Take a look at the numbers below.

So is there anything to fear?

To me it appears that there's no need to worry, because the researchers have not only apprised about the impending shortage well in advance (over 16 years), but have also identified the reasons for it, and have even recommended possible solutions.

Incentives:
For instance, inducing more incentives for primary care practitioners would make their “specialty” more rewarding, and would encourage more graduates to fill in the gaps.

Increasing The Number of Doctors:
Aside from increasing the number of graduates, the demand would perhaps also be met by influx of doctors from other countries to the US.

Increased Access through Technology and Alternatives:
Organized groups of medics would be able to handle the caseload through telephone, e-mail and electronic medical records. Recently, pharmacists in Canada were allowed to write prescriptions, reducing the patients need to visit doctor frequently. Perhaps, similar measures of training medics other than doctors could help. In fact, psychologists (who're not doctors) were allowed to prescribe drugs in New Mexico, back in 2002.

On the whole, the projections might be startling for sure, but since the causes and solutions are known, with so much time to spare, there's a need to be concerned but not be worried.

Child Pregnancy and It's Causes ?

About 16 girls, around 16 years old were reported to be pregnant in Gloucester, and at least 50% of those became pregnant by choice or made a pact to bring up kids. So, what's shocking about it?

Teens getting pregnant is hardly news. What's startling is perhaps the number of pregnancies shot up 4 times (in just one school!), it's also about the pacts that the girls reportedly made, and that some of the girl's partners are in their 20s. And the school administration seems to be shocked over the welfare of these kids.

Ironically, everyone seems to be shocked except for the girls who made the choice. Remember that some of the girls even got depressed when they found they hadn't yet conceived. It seems that only now, the girls might be shocked because everyone around them seems to be. But there's a contention that the girls are too young to apprise the reality, aren't they? So is it enough reason this one, because one of the parents (father) expressed that he let it be, because he cared for his girl's happiness!
So what it is that's so shocking? Is it that some of the girl's partners, who're in their 20s may have committed “statuary rape.” Or that, it's now a long hard road ahead for the girls. Or that quadrupling of the number of pregnancies is startling (is just one school's stats representative of the whole country?). Or are they the public costs that can be saved by curbing teenage pregnancies. As for costs, teenage childbearing public costs were $120 billion from 1985 to 1990, and that $48 billion would have been saved if the pregnancies came about, if mothers were in their 20s.

How To Make Your Heart Disease Free

A new study shows that physical exercise can lead to structural changes in the heart, and the heart gets molded based on the type of exercise you undertake.

Given the power of exercise to affect your heart, if properly undertaken it houses a great potential to keep your heart healthy, thus serving just as a preventive pharmaceutical drug. A healthy heart means that you may never have to depend on a real cardiovascular drug, thus saving you from the suffering as also the expenses that you may have to incur on treatment.

WHO estimates reveal, 17.5 million people died from cardiovascular disease in 2005, which amounted to 30 % of all deaths on the planet. While the figures aren’t quite optimistic, an individual can do a lot to avoid being a victim of heart disease. Some simple lifestyle habits include avoiding tobacco, improving your diet, and staying active, controlling your weight and maintaining your health.

When it comes to exercises one often has a choice, however aerobic exercises are considered especially helpful for the heart. These are steady physical activities that involve large muscle groups.

Physical activities such as walking, jogging, jumping rope, bicycling, cross-country skiing, skating, rowing, etc are all considered as aerobics. Aerobic exercises have shown to be most beneficial when an individual gradually works up to an aerobic session 20 to 30 minutes long. Though a daily dose of this natural pharmaceutical drug is best, exercising three to four times a week also works fine.

To keep up the good work once you’ve begun you need to ensure that you enjoy doing it. In order to make that happen choose an enjoyable activity, decide whether you like it alone or in a group, when does the activity best fits your schedule? etc.

If you don’t exercise already, it may take a bit of motivation to get yourself started, but once you get into the groove, the benefits of this all natural cardiovascular drug would unfold one by one to sculpt your heart to health and happiness.

Green Tea A Medication For Aging

Green tea is rich in antioxidants, which prevent our bodies’ cells from damage due to oxidation. The process is not very different from preventing your car from being rusted.

Green Tea is often consumed as a dietary supplement. A dietary supplement refers to (as discussed on themedica.com) as vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements and other substances (e.g weight loss supplement) meant to improve your diet. Green tea comprises EGCG or the epigallocatechin gallate that makes the tea power packed with the advantages of antioxidants.

As far as aging is concerned, many studies blame free radicals within our bodies as the ones responsible of it. Consequently, the higher the quantity of free radicals in your body, the faster you would age. Since the main job of antioxidents is to neutralize the free radicals their presence is supposed to slow down the rate of aging. Apart from green tea some common sources of antioxidants are apricots, broccoli, pumpkin, cantaloupes, spinach, sweet potatoes and tomatoes. So it makes good sense to supplement your diet with these as well.

However there’s a problem, and that is, once you drink the tea, 80 percent of its antioxident catechins are lost during digestion, making the mechanism highly inefficient. At the same time a tasty solution to this problem exists. Studies have found that when the tea is coupled with some specific foods, antioxidant absorption becomes a lot more efficient. Out of the edibles that make it so, lemon ranks first, followed by orange, lime and grapefruit juices. In fact lemon has been found to retain 80 percent of the catechins. No magic potion is needed, even a simple herb such as green tea can go a long way to protect your body from the harmful effects of free radicals, and tastefully too!

Some of the weird allergies that might affect health are caused by some very common things. Allergies can affect anyone and it is very essential to identify what you are allergic to and find out the best available treatment for it.

  • Kiss allergy: It may sound humorous that kisses can also trigger allergic reactions in humans. Real kisses can develop hives, rashes, itchy eyes, blisters on eyelids, puffy lips, wheezing and respiratory distress. A small peck on cheek does not pose any serious dangers but passionate kisses can. In order to prevent yourself from the risks of kiss allergy, one can take antihistamine tablets, topical creams, and other anti allergy medications. Besides medicines, one can also follow these simple steps such as brushing teeth, rinsing mouth and chewing gum properly before indulging into any type of kiss.

  • Underwear Allergy: is that type of reaction in which skin develops rashes, itching and even blisters. The underwear allergy is very troublesome to the extent that it is painful while touching or rubbing that area. Anyone suffering from underwear allergy can get rid of it very easily and quickly. The main reason responsible for causing this type of allergy in both men and women could be the different types of fabrics used in making it such as polyester, cotton, latex etc. The best solution for avoiding this type of allergy is to use high quality, skin friendly and bacterial resistant underpants.
